ばってん荒川に憧れて芸人を目指したため、デビュー当時は「バッテン江頭」の芸名を名乗っていたが、夜中に酒を飲んで酔いが回ると必ずと言っていいほど深夜2時50分以降に暴れ出し、ゲイキャラになることから江頭2:50と名付けられた。
